Quito (Ecuador) (AP) The death toll in a gang battle in a penitentiary in the coastal city of Guayaquil has risen to more than 100 as authorities find more bodies, Ecuador's prison service said Wednesday. At least five of the bodies were beheaded. The country's prisons bureau said in a tweet that as of the moment more than 100 dead and 52 injured have been confirmed in Tuesday's clash the Guayas prison. Earlier, the confirmed death toll had stood at 30 but regional police commander Fausto Buenao said bodies found in the prison's pipelines were still being identified. Armored vehicles, soldiers, ambulances and relatives of inmates gathered outside the penitentiary, the latter waiting for news of loved ones inside. Indian scientists have for the first time developed a thermally stable and cost-effective electronic polymer-based sensor for rapidly detecting nitro-aromatic chemicals used in high-energy explosives, the Department of Science and Technology (DST) said on Friday. The detection of explosives without destroying them is essential for protection, and criminal investigations, minefield remediation, military applications, ammunition remediation sites, security applications, and chemical sensors play a vital role in such cases, it said. Explosive poly-nitroaromatic compounds can be analysed usually by sophisticated instrumental techniques. But the requirements for quick decision making in criminology laboratories or reclaimed military sites or to detect explosives in possession of extremists often require simple, cheap, and selective field techniques, which will be non-destructive in nature, the DST said. Visva-Bharati University Vice-Chancellor Bidyut Chakraborty courted controversy Saturday when a video circulated on social media purportedly showed him blaming a section of teachers for not doing enough to prevent incidents of theft in different departments of the varsity. In the video of a virtual meeting between the V-C and faculty members held on Friday, a voice resembling that of Chakraborty can be heard telling them of not doing their bit to prevent recent thefts, and trying to pass the buck on security guards, who are reluctant to lodge any FIR fearing the henchmen of a bahubali' (strongman) of Birbhum district. Because of him (bahubali), Visva-Bharati cannot take any foolproof step to boost security. Assam Reports 365 New COVID Cases, Two More Fatalities

Twelve crore farmers have benefited so far from the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana and 2.5 crore of them are from Uttar Pradesh, BJP national vice president Radha Mohan Singh said Friday. Speaking at the Kisan Samman Samaroh organised at the Deen Dayal Veterinary University here, he said a total of Rs 1.60 lakh crore has been spent on the scheme so far. He said, "2.5 crore farmers also benefited in Uttar Pradesh under the Kisan Samman Nidhi." While felicitating 71 farmers from Mathura, the former Union minister also said sugarcane-growers were paid Rs 1.43 lakh crore in Uttar Pradesh. Bengal Logs 743 Fresh COVID-19 Cases, 14 More Fatalities

West Bengal reported 14 fresh CIVID-19 fatalities on Wednesday, raising the toll to 18,613, while the coronavirus tally mounted to 15,58,860 with 743 single-day cases, a health department bulletin said on Wednesday. The state now has 8,050 active cases and 15,32,197 people have recovered from the disease so far, including 753 since Tuesday, it said. Nadia recorded six deaths, followed by North 24 Parganas (4) and Kolkata (2). The new infections include 142 in North 24 Parganas and 130 in the metropolis. Police On Lookout For Uncle Of One Of Arrested Pak-trained Terrorists

The Delhi Police is looking for Humaid-ur-Rehman, a relative of one of the alleged terrorists arrested by the Special Cell, officials said on Wednesday. The Delhi Police's Special Cell on Tuesday busted a Pakistan-organised terror module with the arrest of six men, including two Pak-ISI trained terrorists. The accused, identified as Jaan Mohammad Sheikh (47) alias ''Sameer'', Osama (22), Moolchand (47), Zeeshan Qamar (28), Mohd Abu Bakar (23) and Mohd Amir Javed (31), were arrested following raids in Delhi and parts of Uttar Pradesh. All the six arrested accused, including Osama and Qamar, were produced at a Delhi court and have been taken on 14 days' police remand for further interrogation, they said. Child Dies Of Pneumonia In Bengal, 88 In Hospital With High Fever

One child died due to pneumonia and pleural effusion while 88 others are being treated for high fever and diarrhoea at a state-run hospital in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district on Tuesday, a senior official at the medical establishment said. While 42 children were discharged from Jalpaiguri Sadar Hospital, blood samples were sent for tests to find out whether they were suffering from Chikungunya, Dengue, Scrub Typhus or Japanese Encephalitis. "The child who died was from Mekhliganj and was brought to the hospital in quite a critical condition. He died due to pneumonia and pleural effusion. He was six years old and had congenital heart disease," Acting superintendent of the hospital, Dr Rahul Bhowmick, told PTI. Three children were referred to the North Bengal Medical College and Medical for advanced treatment, he said. Nine-month-old Boy Dies After Portion Of Roof Collapses

A nine-month-old boy died after a portion of a roof fell on him in North Delhi's Swaroop Nagar area, police said on Sunday. The Swaroop Nagar Police Station on Saturday received a PCR call that a house's roof caved in and a woman and her child were buried under it, a senior police officer said. Police reached the spot and found three people buried under the debris. They were taken to Kapil hospital, Burari from where they were referred to LNJP Trauma Centre, the officer said. At LNJP, Naksh was declared brought dead. Her mother, Anchal (20), suffered severe injuries but was stable. Sidhi (9), who was conscious, also suffered some injuries.
